Collier Speaks at Morrow County Fair
MOUNT GILEAD - Crediting “excellent weather,” Mike Willey, president of the Morrow County Fair Board, reported the eight-day run of the 159th fair attracted an attendance of 1,500-1,600 people above that of last year.
The top day was Saturday when 6,000 people paid admission to attend the OSTPA grand-stand attraction, states a press release from the fair board. The fair ran from Aug. 31 through Labor Day, Sept. 7.
A first time grandstand attraction were the School Bus races, which Willey termed as being “successful.”
According to the board release, 182 camping sites were filled with campers residing on the grounds for the duration of the fair.
Carol Holsinger, Junior Fair coordinator, stated the “great weather made for a fantastic fair.” The annual livestock sale on the last day was well attended with sales going high. The Building Fund Pig generated $10,200 in donations and was purchased at bid price by Hoffman’s Meat Processing, Cardington, which after processing the animal, donated the meat to the Morrow County Food Bank.
Holsinger said the junior fair exhibitors, about 800 youths, belong to 45-50 county 4-H Clubs, FFA chapters and Boy and Girl Scout Troops.
Named the top float in the annual parade was that of the Johnsville Jolly Farmers and Farmerettes 4-H Club. Bill Hershner, of Johnsville, whose involvement with 4-H began as a youth and was followed with 47 years as an advisor, was named the parade’s Grand Marshal.
The Sunday events, to which all veterans were admitted free, included a tribute to them at the grandstand. Speaker was Thom Collier, former Ohio House Representative.
Elected directors to the Morrow County Agricultural Society following the annual election on Saturday of the fair were David Pearce, Harold Bush, Chris Lloyd, Sam Miller, Ron Williams, Mike High, Steve May, Tim Brake and Kathy Eichorn.
